You know those times when you want comfort food, but you also kind of want to see and be seen? Taking the high road in getting over someone, a more sociable wallowing and all that jazz? Well let me put it this way: Delicatessen, in New York’s swanky SoHo neighborhood, serves up deep fried wantons stuffed with melty, delicious cheeseburger. And the venue couldn’t be more gorgeous. Or the people.
So lets talk space. Located on a prime corner spot, Delicatessen is perfectly positioned for people watching with two terraces and walls of windows. Inside or out, you’re primed for watching the well-heeled world go by, shopping bags in arm. The interior is all clean lines, glass, and beautiful lighting, but it’s also comfortable and not at all intimidating. This is what I think of when I think of chic — effortless, inviting, and beautiful.
Now lets talk menu. The last time I came here my friend and I were in need of some classy comfort food. So we went for the aforementioned cheeseburgers wrapped up in a deep fried wanton. There are no words for how amazing these were: they were was crispy and crunchy; the burger bit was perfectly done; and the most ooey-gooey cheese rounded it out. I’m pretty sure ambrosia isn’t a beverage, it’s these.
We also ordered the truffle fries to share, and they’re a thin cut fry, which is my favorite, served with a truffle oil that is a bit garlicky, but mellow. Ed Note: these reheat beautifully under a broiler for a next day breakfast, and they crisp up beautifully.
I’ve also had brunch here before, and the serving size was ample, and the food delicious. Prices are reasonable, especially for the SoHo area, and the quality is superb.
