On my recent trip to London, I fell in love with the Clerkenwell neighborhood, and one of my favorite spots for dinner in the neighborhood is Giant Robot, right in the middle of things on Clerkenwell Road.
The design of the place is superb, and actually looks more like something you would see in a movie or on a tv show. The bar area is sunken in the center of the space, down a short flight of stairs, but it’s airy and open, with the dining area surrounding the perimeter,so you can see everything that’s happening. The layout gives an airy feel to the space, and I’m sure it’s great for people watching. Overall, the lighting is on point and the decor is kitschy chic.
I was here for an early dinner, so things were a bit quieter than I imagine they normall would be, but it was kind of the perfect atmosphere as I was looking for some quiet downtime after a few weeks on the road.
The food can be summed as as something of an Italian so spires deli situation, and I was quite happy with the mix. I went with the sliders, which were American style burgers served on mini brioche buns with American cheese. Tasty and to the point, they were just enough food. My friend ordered an affogoto for dessert, which was a scoop of ice cream “drowned” in a shot of espresso.
Overall, the place seems like the perfect after work spot, and I could see myself coming here with friends on a Thursday night, either before or instead of going out on the town. Friendly atmosphere, super cool design, and a nice menu to choose from.
